The rapid pace of technological advancement has resulted in an escalating utilisation of computing systems as a means of delivering increasingly complex and demanding customer expectations. Consequently, aerospace products have an escalating dependence upon software and computing systems to provide safety-critical and safety-involved functionality. DCSC research assists in designing and deploying such systems in a manner which will be cost effective both in the short term development and procurement stage but also over the long term, full life-cycle cost base.

Research Themes

The DCSC focuses its research on three topics within the field of dependable computing:

• Requirements and Specification - Creating accurate requirements in the early stages of a project ensures minimal rework and significant cost savings throughout the project life-cycle.
• Real-Time Systems Engineering - Research into leading edge design and implementation techniques for both hardware and software which increase flexibility, optimises performance with emphasis on correctness, certifiability and safety.
• Safety Engineering - Incorporating hazard analysis techniques and developing new certification methods allow modern design techniques to be used with confidence.

About The DCSC

The original founders, in 1991, were British Aerospace, the University of York and the University of Newcastle. The DCSC has persisted as a world class centre for research into dependable computing systems through the changing face of the company and its affiliated Joint Ventures. A mixture of strategic and tactical research is currently being conducted on behalf of BAE SYSTEMS (Operations) Ltd - Air Systems, BAE SYSTEMS Avionics, MBDA UK Ltd, and the BAE SYSTEMS' Virtual University, including the Advanced Technology Centre."

DCSC works closely with the companies to ensure its processes and techniques are appropriate to the business, compatible with existing products and processes and tested as robust on an industrial scale by the use of real world case studies wherever possible. This close relationship allows the DCSC to offer both 'tailor-made' solutions and facilitates the sharing of best practice from across the companies.
